Sweden’s government has lifted the advice against unnecessary travel to Slovenia and Malta effective October 8 after estimating that the Coronavirus situation in both countries has improved recently, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

“Swedish citizens or people with a residence permit in Sweden are no longer affected by Slovenia’s requirement of a ten-day quarantine if they travel there from Sweden.

Malta has announced that it has removed the ban on the entry that previously applied to travellers from Sweden and travellers from Sweden are no longer affected by quarantine requirements," ministry’s statement reads.

Up to this point, Sweden has registered 98,451 COVID cases. A total of 5,894 persons have died from the deadly virus

In this regard, Sweden’s Public Health Agency director-general Johan Carlson emphasised that Sweden’s preventive measures imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus could remain in place for at least another year, with the possibility of additional local restrictions.

We can expect that measures against the spread of corona will remain for some time, we’re talking about at least another year.

The measures that are being taken in Europe are not sustainable, we’re trying to find a level that is steady, and that keeps the spread down.

"We can’t get rid of it, but we can keep it down at a reasonable level,” Johan Carlson

The country's pandemic policies pushing for herd immunity has created painful differences in the scientific community. The stark contrast with other European countries evoked both admiration and alarm in other countries.

The Swedish government has not entirely ignored the health threat as measures were taken such as bans on large gatherings.

Swedish authorities will postpone the plans to let more people attend sports events and concerts, citing rising coronavirus infection numbers both within the country and around Europe.

The government said in August it intended to raise the limit for some events to 500 from the current 50.

However, with case numbers clearly rising within Sweden, the government said it would have to postpone the move.

Last month, Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it lifted the advice against
non-essential travel to Slovakia and Finland.

Since mid-September, Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also lifted the advice against non-essential travel to the United Kingdom. The decision came after estimating that COVID-19 new cases in the UK marked a decrease.

Since September 10, 2020, Sweden’s authorities no longer advise their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Cyprus.
