DENMARK TAVERN

A Riverside Heritage Cafe and Lodge In this building in 1786, the British innkeeper James Parr opened "the Denmark
Tavern and Hotel". An advertisement in the Calcutta Gazette announced that "Gentlemen passing up and down the river
may be accommodated with breakfast, dinner, supper, and lodging; also liquors sold by the single dozen and a good
billiard table and coffee room with the newspapers."

The new tavern soon became a well-known attraction for European citizens and travellers. It was conveniently located
at Serampore's elegant promenade that stretched along the Hooghly River. During evenings, Europeans enjoyed the
peaceful atmosphere at the riverside where they came for a stroll in their finest clothes.

A Danish trading post From 1755 Serampore was administered by Denmark under the name Frederiksnagore. The flourishing
trade attracted merchants, weavers and workers from near and far and several Indian families built up fortunes on the
trade with Europe and constructed grand palatial houses. Serampore gained a reputation as the most beau-tiful town in
India, but gradually the competition from the English East India Company became too great In 1845 Denmark sold its
Indian possessions to Britain.Other important heritage sites from the Danish colonial era still exist: The court
compound with the old Government House and gateways, St. Olav's Church, the Catholic Church, the Jail, Serampore
College, the Danish cemetery, the Baptist mission Church and burial ground, and the Bengal grand houses.
