The second Corona wave has Europe in its grip. Despite restrictions and lockdowns, many are forced to work. Across four countries, people describe how they are experiencing the second wave and what they find particularly difficult, but also, what motivates them and what gives them hope.

In Belarus, people have been taking to the streets for months. The dominant theme is the protests against President Lukashenko. But the second wave of the pandemic has also arrived here. There are hardly any national countermeasures. A woman from Minsk, at risk because of her age, has moved to her countryside dacha to spend the winter there. The risk of infection in the big city was too high for her.

In Istanbul, the measures to contain the virus endanger a landmark of the city: the street animals. Outlet restrictions make it difficult for animal lovers to feed the approximately 300,000 cats and dogs. Because restaurants have had to close, leftover food for the animals is also left out. The staff of the Huysuz İhtiyar animal welfare association cook food for stray dogs despite all adversities.

Almería in southern Spain is known as "Europe's garden". Fruit and vegetables for the continent's supermarkets are produced in huge greenhouses. The already poor working and living conditions of the harvest workers are exacerbated by the coronavirus. Other infectious diseases were already a problem before the pandemic. The doctor Vladimir Morante from the NGO Médicos del Mundo is trying to ensure basic medical care for the workers.

The 5-star Hotel De Russie in Rome is hardly allowed to accommodate foreign guests in the Corona winter of 2020/2021. A long-time hotel employee takes care of the rooms and the reception of the few remaining guests and shows how different working in the luxury hotel has become due to pandemic.
