Byzantium had been at war with the Chinese Vikings for as long as its people could remember. What started as a minor conflict over the fate of Panama became a full blown rivalry, and war quickly consumed these two civilizations. Despite the bravery of the Danes, Byzantium had the advantage of a powerful navy. It's Dromons dominated the seas and from the fall of Aarhus, the Kingdom of Denmark in mainland China was doomed. It wasn't long before Theodora consolidated her power over the lowlands. Jarl Harold Bluetooth himself was captured and forced to swear allegiance to the Byzantine Empress. Begrudgingly, he accepted a role as part of her court, acting as a military advisor and personal trophy of the Theodora. He would live a happy life, but would forever be haunted by his failure to protect his people, and Theodora kept him around as a reminder of her power. The Danes had been feared for their battle prowess and now their leader was nothing more than Theodora's "pet".

Following the annexation of Denmark, Byzantium shifted its focus to exploration. Crafting a new form of ship called the 'Caravel', the empire of East Rome sailed beyond the horizons. Its expeditionary forces encountered the hostile Dene peoples of North America, the savages of Papua New Guinea, the Siberian Empire of Morocco, and other great and terrible nations. It was in their journey to what was called Southern Indochina that the scouts of the Byzantines came across their greatest discovery.

There existed a nation unlike any other, for instead of a leader of flesh and blood, they followed a creature of untold height and power. The beast dwelled in a manmade sea and its followers performed rituals and sacrifices day and night to appease it. From what the scouts could gather, the being had been trapped on Earth by its kin and was desperate to seek a way home. As panic began to spread with news of this monster, Theodora thought of a different solution. A creature capable of enslaving entire kingdoms could prove an invaluable ally and, once the creature returned to its domain, someone would have to rule over its thralls.

Against the wishes of her advisors, Theodora and her personal guard of Cataphracts voyaged to the enthralled nation and sought audience with the beast. The people that served the monster were cautious to trust, but when Theodora promised she'd help their god return to its realm, they eagerly welcomed her and brought her before the hulking being. Theodora would make a pact with the creature that called itself "Cthulhu" and the world-- unknowing of this unholy union-- awaited their wrath.

About Civilization V

Civilization V is a turn-based strategy game developed by Firaxis and published by 2K Games that's focused on empire building. Players take the role of one of several nations based on great empires from across human history and use everything from resources to diplomacy to warfare to defeat their rivals.

Civilization V Gameplay

Civilization V revolves around building empires, founding cities, and using your resources wisely. Players have to manage their populace, happiness, culture, and wealth while researching scientific endeavours. Players must also manage what's being constructed in their cities, which can range from military units to buildings to world wonders (of which only one of each can exist in the whole world).

There are five ways to win in Civilization V: Time, Domination, Cultural, Science, and Diplomatic victories are all possible. Time relies on the player's score, which is accumulated from the size of their empire, wonders built, technologies researched, and personal accomplishment. When the game reaches a certain turn limit, the player with the highest score wins. Domination requires that a player control the capitals of every other player in the game, which can only be taken through invasion and war. Cultural victories require that the player's culture becomes dominant over all others, which is dependent on the amount of Tourism the player is outputting: more people are visiting your empire means that more people are practicing your culture. Science victories are achieved through building a ship that can reach Alpha Centauri, implying that the player's nations has advanced enough to become space-faring. And diplomatic victories require the player to become the leader of the world, which involves earning the votes of smaller nations (City-States) and their former rival empires in the United Nations.
