Amid the #COVID19 pandemic, Indonesia is facing its worst economic crisis since the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis. Since tough social restriction measures kicked in, some 5 million Indonesians have fallen into poverty, surviving on US$1 or less a day -- and the poverty rate could soon climb as high as 13 per cent - meaning some 30 million could be living under the official poverty line.
The Indonesian government has pledged 200 trillion rupiah in social assistance such as direct cash transfers and food handouts to help the poor. But not all has been disbursed due to bureaucratic red tape, inadequate census data, and the country’s sheer size.
