In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Mauritius.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Mauritius was uninhabited by humans until the Arabs landed there in the Middle Ages. The Portuguese came next, but neither stayed. The Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, naming it after Prince Maurice van Nassau. They were followed by the French, and the British. Under British rule Mauritius became the Empire’s main sugar-producing colony.

2. The Dodo, which is the national bird of Mauritius, is an extinct species of a flightless bird, which was a resident of this island, centuries ago. Dodos were found only on this island and nowhere else in the world. Within 100 years of the arrival of humans on Mauritius, the once abundant dodo became a rare bird. The last one was killed in 1681.

3. Port Louis, both the capital and the largest city of Mauritius, was set up in 1736 by the French East India Company.

4. A prominent tourist attraction is the ‘seven coloured earth’ in Chamarel, where the sand is found in seven different colours within a very small space. The sand dunes, which were a result of volcanic activity, are now protected but samples are sold in souvenir shops.

5. Mauritius is one of Africa’s top tourist destinations. Places like Ile aux Cerfs, Rodrigues Island or Les 7 Cascades offer beautiful sceneries and plentiful beaches.

6. The La Vanille Nature Park contains the largest group of captive bred giant Aldabra tortoises in the world (more than a thousand), as well as over 2000 Nile crocodiles, monkeys, bats, geckos, and deer plus an Insectarium.

7. The other is Mont Le Morne Brabant. A popular climb for its breathtaking views, this mountain was a place of sanctuary for escaped slaves known as maroons during the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is one of the wildest and most preserved mountains in the country.
